Having decided to strategically locate a site on junction 6 of the M20 and between Maidstone and Medway, Scania wanted to develop their first corporate image service depot. gdm took the conceptual designs prepared by the Swedish offices and worked with them to create a building format that would look good and meet the Swedish corporate requirements but at the same time, achieve planning consent, pass UK building regulations and be built within budget. The solution is a smart, simple, yet strong image building that has set the standards for future service depots throughout the UK. The operational layouts are very space hungry and planning the site was a critical feature of its success. Working on a Gallagher owned site and within only a few miles of their quarry, gdm was able to introduce locally sourced rock within the gabion retaining structures and to the boundary walls.
