An interesting mix of new and old, gdm combined the full refurbishment of an existing building of heritage interest with a large modern two storey extension. This provided a relocation and joining together for a group doctors' surgery, with treatment and other patient-focused facilities. The internal layout offers well organised space with glazed light wells giving glimpses from old to new (and vice versa) enabling users to read the building’s evolvement. Externally the contemporary architecture of the extension is set against the traditional articulation of the existing building, thus enabling each to live side-by-side and complement each other. The Bower Mount Medical Practice building achieves the rare feat of providing interesting and functional space with a quality design all within the client’s budget.
