A tricky town centre site in Maidstone has become our latest planning success, with permission granted for 6 flats. The site, which has neighbours in proximity on all sides, fronts both Week Street and Union Street and is currently underutilised.
Our design takes advantage of the openings between the similarly scaled buildings that surround the site, with spaces designed to minimise overlooking. The ground floor has been developed as a ‘podium’ upon which the upper residential floors sit which is in keeping with the rest of Week Street, most of which has commercial on the ground.A strong modern identity has been developed for the building, with visual interest created by projecting brickwork and varying window arrangements.
Two differing bricks are being used that gives definition to the lower storeys and relates it to the street level treatment of shopfronts adjacent. We’ve enjoyed the challenges that have come from this infill site, developing a scheme that satisfies and compliments multiple viewpoints whilst creating a building that technically can be delivered in a small narrow space.
