Maidstone Borough Council has granted our application, on behalf of Eco Regeneration Ltd, to redevelop Britannia House on Granville Road. Located in the heart of Maidstone, the site, which currently houses a vacant light industrial unit, will provide 28 affordable apartments.
The road has precedence, with two neighbouring residential developments that were both successfully designed by gdm. One of the schemes is nearing completion and features 20 apartments, the other site features twelve apartments.
A strong design proposal has been fostered that responds to these developments and creates a related but subtly varied design language for the area. Our design gives a softness to the street, with the design stepped back from the street edge and planting fronting Granville Road.
Floor to ceiling windows flood habitable spaces with light, break up the mass of each block and help to evolve the architectural language of Granville Road. Zinc style cladding and multi red facing brickwork will be used to distinguish the building yet respond to the neighbouring properties.
We look forward to seeing this project progress to site and deliver these much-needed new homes for the local community.
